CoD V.1.5.3- Money, money, money! It's not funny!
This morning I woke up, put on a couple of layers, stepped out and scraped ice off my windshield. It snowed last night.
One day I will wake up and step out of my mosquito net hoping that not too many got through and bit me, thus giving me malaria. I'll put on a pair of shorts and turn my boots upside down before I put them on, to make sure no scorpions crawled in overnight. I'll pick up my walking stick with which to scare away highly poisonous snakes before they bite me; and walk to the outhouse or to the the field I'll have to use as my washroom. Then I'll have to make sure there are no scorpions or snakes or any other highly dangerous poisonous creatures ready and waiting to bite me in the bottom. Then i'll go pump some water, and lug it back to my hut, and make me some breakfast, making sure to boil the water well to kill all the bacteria, viruses and parasites in it. All this will I do before I commence my day, and yet, I will not miss having to scrape ice off my windshied, nor will i miss snow in the middle of October. alas...
Well, it would appear that an apology is due: it's been two weeks since I last posted, and I can imagine how restless you must have been- waiting, watching, hoping, killing yourself trying to figure out when I would post next. Never fear, the post is here!
Much has happened in these last two weeks. Mostly, I've slacked off, but I also found out much. For one thing, I found out how much financial support I need to raise before they'll allow me to go. Now I just have to start raising it, which becomes very interesting.
I'm a big fan of supporting missions. Based on my belief that missions is one of the most important activities we need to carry out while on Earth, I now think my money is much better spent in the support of missionaries than it is in buying me an X-box game, or a sweatshirt, etc. It's been my honour and my pleasure to support missionaries.
And yet, I can't bring myself to ask for support. I can't figure out a letter I'm happy with, can't decide on a way to ask people to join with God in His work in my life by supporting me financially. I'm not sure if this is pride, or just stupidity. I just can't find a way to do this that I'm comfortable enough with. When I do, you'll all receive my second prayer letter! Meanwhile, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I welcome them!
Anyways, as I mentioned, I did indeed receive my financial support budget:
I need to raise Cdn$ 12,834.26 as a one-time outgoing expense. This includes $1,680 for TIMO housing (that's one luxurious mud hut! maybe for the land?) and $1,680 for a TIMO vehicle (I'm guessing we don't get road-bicycles. I know of a team in Sudan that drives 'Unimogs'- http://www.unimog-trucks.com/- part tank, part cabana-hut). It also includes around$2,000 for various periods of training and orientation, $1,300 for tickets (which I think is pretty cheap, trans-atlantic tickets are usually a lot more expensive), $800 for immunizations and various medical tests (to ensure that not ALL parasites attack me equally violently...), $750 for TIMO set-up, $600 for stuff regarding my application to live in Tanzania, and a bunch of other things.
So yeah, the total is $12,834.26 (it'll be cool to see who gives me the quarter and the penny), out of which, by the grace of God, I already have $200 without even having begun raising support. So $12,634.26 to go!
And then there's my monthly support: I need to raise cdn$ 1,372.00 in pledges every month for two years. This includes a personal allowance which isn't very high, but that's cool cos it's not like I'll have much to spend it on (supplies maybe? Anti-venom now and then, haha!). It includes group life insurance, a Works fund (I'm not sure what that is), group medical which takes up a nice chunk (you know, just in case I need to be airlifted out for letting too many mosquitoes in the net, or for forgetting to shake out my shoes, or forgetting to carry my anti-mamba stick, etc), and a bunch of allocations and deductions.
So now all I need is to find 14 friends who'll support me for $100 bucks a month, and I'll be set. Or alternately, 28 friends who'll support me for $50/month. Or 69 friends who'll do $20 a month. Or 100 friends who'll do 13.72/month. Or 274 friends who'll do $5.00 a month. But I don't think I have that many friends. OR- one friend who'll do $1,370 every month for two years, and another who'll do a twoonie a month. Yay! Of this, I have nothing raised yet, but then it's not like i've started raising anything so...
Well, I thought I'd share this with you and ask you to pray for me - that I may be able to ask, and that I may be able to not 'raise', but to 'bring down' the money (ultimately it all belongs to God, it is He who will provide). And, of course, if any of you would prayerfully consider this and decide to help support me, that'd be great too. I believe cheques would have to be made out to Africa Inland Mission, and in the comment line you'd have to write 'for the support of Dan Andrade', or just Dan Andrade. You can drop off your cheques with me or mail them to Africa Inland Mission, 1641 Victoria Park Ave, Scarborough, ON. M1R 1P8.
Thanks, and please keep praying!
